Xiaomi Mi Airdots in 2020: Worth Your Purchase?

About a year ago, Xiaomi took its first stab at the truly wireless earbud market with the Xiaomi Mi Airdots, a journey that would bathe the company in controversy as well as set it on a direct path to becoming a sizeable player in this market space. Now, just a year later, I have bought myself the Xiaomi Mi Airdots at its lowest price yet, and despite having its flaws, I do not regret my purchase.

A Design that Hasn’t Aged Too Well

IMG_0294.jpeg

Upon first unboxing my earbuds, which I bought in the black colour, I found a minimal, stylish looking earbud and case. From the very first moment I saw it, I knew that this was a product that I was willing to use in public without the fear of it impacting my style, the same of which I cannot say of Xiaomi’s latest efforts, which all look too big and bulky in my opinion.

Despite looking like an expensive set of earbuds, the Xiaomi Mi Airdots unfortunately don’t feel very premium in the hand. In the age where many companies, Xiaomi included, have moved on to using more careful construction and more expensive materials, the plastic construction of this device feels very “first generation”. I knew from the very first touch, that this device would be one that would be prone to scratching in no time.

Yet another area where the design has not aged so well is in the case’s charging method. In the era where using a single USB C cable for all your products is possible, having to carry around a micro USB cable feels very outdated. What’s worse is that, at least in the “basic”edition that I purchased in Hong Kong, a charging cable was not included, and as I have tried to USB C all things, I had to purchase a new cable separately. Considering that this device is sold in many regions of the world where the micro USB charging method is still the standard, some users may not experience this same frustration, but it would certainly be nice to see a revision of this device that uses the USB C standard.

Overall, in terms of design, the Xiaomi Mi Airdots look stunning, featuring a minimal design language that would make anyone assume it is worth more than its cost. Unfortunately, it is once you touch it that the product starts to show its age, with a build quality that isn’t anything impressive, and a charging method that feels lacking when compared to modern offerings.

Functionality That Holds Up

IMG_0295.jpeg

But perhaps you don’t care for looks, and in terms of functionality, the Xiaomi Mi Airdots still hold up. In a market that is saturated with expensive earbuds full of customisation, companion apps and touch controls, the Mi Airdots keeps to the basics and just work. They are not impressive, but they are a no risk solution, and I adore that!

Take Xiaomi’s latest for example, the Mi Air 2 SE, it is a much better sounding pair of earbuds, but the price is way higher all thanks for the product’s ability to connect to a phone app, which at the time of our review did not even work. But with the Mi Airdots, that isn’t a concern - you’re buying them because they’ll connect to your phone and just work.

On the sound front, as I just stated, Xiaomi’s latest offerings will sound much better than this one, but for the casual user who just wants a cheap way to listen to music without the wires, I have no complaints. If what you’re looking for however is a great way to join voice calls, stay away from this product. The microphone quality is just terrible, and on most instances, the people who I was calling said they would rather have me use no microphone at all.

Another thing that is certainly worth mentioning is this product’s durability. When it was first released, Xiaomi received a lot of criticism because the earbuds would either physically break or stop working altogether. I am glad to say that neither of these issues have happened to me after roughly a month of very frequent usage. Perhaps I got lucky, or maybe the latest production units are built to a higher standard, but if my experience is anything to judge by, you should have a pleasurable experience using these earbuds for years to come.

Conclusion

What was originally Xiaomi’s decent but untrustworthy entry into the truly wireless earbud market has now become a cheap, accessible way to buy yourself a truly wireless set of earbuds. In a market full of extra features, the Xiaomi Mi Airdots strip down to the very basics, offering a pleasurable experience only hindered by the already outdated build quality. For its price, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product to anyone simply looking to listen to some music on the go without the hassles that come with wires.

UiiSii BN80 First Impressions: Price King

With many “truly wireless earbuds” releasing in the past few months, we still maintain the opinion that neckband style Bluetooth earbuds are better - but as companies dropped their focus on this sort of headphone, they’ve become less and less common. Thankfully, the UiiSii BN80s not only revive a style of product we love, but also create a product that for its price is simply unmatched.

Featuring dual drivers, sound is the BN80’s top priority: being fantastic for all sorts of songs that you may listen to in your day to day life. This technology, which brings great change to audio fidelity, simply cannot be found in similarly priced pairs of truly wireless earbuds - as those generally focus their resources in other features such as their charging case.

IMG_0133.jpeg

Another great standout feature of this headphone is its 15 hour battery life - the equivalent of many truly wireless earbuds once you have completely drained their charging case. This means being able to go for a long trip without the need of bringing the charging cable along, or taking breaks from your listening experience because your earbuds “just need a quick top up”.

Furthermore, these headphones are the prime representation of what makes neckband headphones our favourite style of Bluetooth headphones: magnets. By making sure that the earbuds connect to one another, this pair of headphones is low-profile, comfortable to wear, and won’t be so easily lost as is the case with truly wireless earbuds.

As for latency, whilst we haven’t used these headphones sufficiently at the time of this writing to fully test out its latency, our first impression watching video content has been more than positive - allowing for media consumption that is fully in sync with your phone despite the Bluetooth connection.

Lastly, and just as important, for only 50 dollars, these earbuds come with a great variety of ear tips in the box - ensuring a great deal of customisability that ultimately ensures that your purchase will serve you no matter how your ears may be shaped.

Haylou GT2: 5 Things To Love

IMG_20191108_144329.jpg

The Haylou GT2s have just released, and after spending a while using them, we have found a great deal to love about the successor to one of our favourite value buds of last year. With that said, below follow simply 5 of those reasons:

A Value Beast

With most of the consumer market finally coming to accept that Bluetooth earbuds were an idea for the better, major tech companies have been quick to produce fantastic, but unfortunately also fantastically expensive audio experiences. The Haylou GT2s however, come at under $20, making them not only a viable option for every tech consumer, but one that can be easily replaced without breaking the bank.

Small and Compact

Unlike most modern wireless earbuds, which take the gen 1 AirPods toothbrush design, the Haylou GT2 feels like a very minimalistic piece of technology. If to be described to the everyday person, I’d go as far as saying these are one of those earbuds that can simply disappear in your ear when you wear them, making them perfect with just about every outfit.

Long Lasting Fun

Part of the massive convenience of Bluetooth earbuds is the ability to use them away from your phone. When your battery doesn’t last however, this convenience can then become an awful disturbance - thankfully, this is no problem for the Haylou GT2. After using them with medium volume for about 2 and a half hours, our Bluetooth settings told us that we still had 50% charge on the earbuds themselves, meaning you can expect at least 4 to 5 hours of pure listening experience.

A Better Case

As some may remember, our experience with the original Haylou GT1s were not very pleasing, with our case breaking in the very first day. With their successors, we are happy to say that we feel more confident that the case will stand the test of time this time around.

Just as great is the fact that this case now comes with a built in charger, allowing you to easily and quickly charge your earbuds in the event that they do ever need more juice.

Button Controls

Another major complaint that we had with the first gen Haylou earbuds were their less than superb touch controls. But with the new button controls, that problem has since been fixed. While they weirdly enough exclude the ability to control volume, they offer a more than sufficient method change your tracks without having the terrible feeling of pushing the earbuds into your ears.

There’s much more to love about the Haylou GT2s, but we hope that these 5 reasons may be enough to keen your interest in what just may be our new favourite value king of 2019.

Features

What I Like

  • AAC Audio Codec provides slightly better sound than the Redmi Airdots

  • Battery life of the headphones is more than 3.5 hours at 2/3 volume and battery life with the case is over 13 hours

  • Amazing control layout means you don’t need to take your phone out to change songs

  • Headphones recharge in under 20 minutes with a fully charged case

User Experience

For a pair of headphones costing less than $20 USD in most places you have to have reasonable expectations. That is truly why I am so impressed with these headphones. They provide nearly the same experience of the QCY T1 Pro for LESS money. The overall convenience of these headphones is part of what is so impressive to me. You get an incredible user experience with a very entry level price.
